Three major Japanese corporations—Hitachi, Itoki, and Tokuyama—have jointly developed a sustainable solution to repurpose end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) panel glass into high-quality furniture components. The innovation uses Tokuyama’s low-temperature thermal decomposition technology to recover intact plate glass, while Hitachi’s non-destructive testing evaluates surface cracks and alkaline elution to ensure safety. Itoki has already created a prototype video conferencing booth using the recycled glass, marking the first time PV panel glass has been reused in furniture without crushing. This process reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50% compared to producing new glass, addressing the looming challenge of PV panel waste (expected to reach 500,000 tons annually in Japan by the 2030s). The companies plan to establish supply chains and standardize quality verification to commercialize the technology, supporting the transition to a circular economy in the furniture industry.
